After a few years at Perry Ellis, Tom grew frustrated at what he felt was a lack of fashion sense, and in 1990, he decided to take a job with Gucci in Milan as the Creative Director for the brand’s feminine ready-to-wear line. His role at Gucci expanded rapidly, heading the menswear and shoe design team within a year of his arrival. While not all was well internally, due to friction between Tom and the company’s chairman, tensions soon quelled, as the company was quickly transitioning out of a state of borderline obscurity and back into prominence, mostly due to Tom’s efforts. As his influence over Gucci’s direction grew larger, so did sales. During the period between 1995 and 1996, revenue increased by 90%. During the following decade, Tom would see Gucci rise to new heights, eventually acquiring the Yves Saint Laurent brand, and even reaching a $10 billion valuation upon his exit in 2004.
