- Sore or tired eyes
- Blurred and/or double vision
- Burning or itching sensation in the eyes
- Difficulty focusing
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Neck and shoulder pain
The Causes
Most eye strain symptoms come from overuse, but some causes may surprise you. These are some of the most common sources we found.
- Computer Vision Syndrome: Staring at a computer, smartphone, or tablet for extended periods of time can cause eye strain due to the high levels of blue light emitted from these devices.
- Lack of Sleep: Not getting enough sleep can cause fatigue and eye strain.
- Incorrect Eyewear: Wearing glasses or contacts with the wrong prescription or without anti reflective coating can cause eye strain.
- Eye muscle imbalances: People who have eye muscle imbalances, such as strabismus, may experience eye strain.
- The Wrong Light: Trying to read in dim light can cause eye strain as the eyes work harder to focus.
- Dry Eyes: When the eyes are dry, they can become irritated and strained.
- Stress: Stress can cause tension in the eyes and lead to eye strain.
- Pre-existing Conditions: People with pre-existing eye conditions, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, may experience eye strain more frequently.
- Aging: As we age, our eyesight naturally deteriorates, which can lead to eye strain.
The Solutions
While some might think the solutions might just come from understanding the causes and working backward from there, it’s actually a bit more counterintuitive than we might think. These are some of the best quick fixes we found for eye strain symptoms.
- 20/20/20: Taking frequent breaks from activities that require prolonged visual concentration, such as using a computer or reading, can help reduce eye strain. A good rule of thumb is to take a break every 20 minutes and look at something that’s around 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
- The Right Light: Working in a well-lit environment can reduce eye strain. If you’re using a computer, make sure the brightness and contrast are adjusted properly to reduce glare. Also, avoid working in dimly lit rooms or in front of a window that lets in too much light.
- Eye Hygiene: Keeping your eyes clean and moisturized can help prevent eye strain. This includes blinking regularly to moisten the eyes and using eye drops if necessary.
- Wearing specialized glasses or lenses: Computer glasses or specialized lenses can help reduce eye strain by filtering out blue light emitted by digital devices.
- Prescription Accuracy: Wearing the correct prescription glasses or contact lenses can help reduce eye strain caused by vision problems, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.
- Your Posture Matters: Maintaining proper posture while working can help reduce eye strain. Sit up straight and position your computer screen at the correct height and distance.
- Sleep is Key: Getting enough sleep can help reduce eye strain and prevent fatigue.
- Anti-glare screen filters: Anti-glare screen filters can be used on computers and other digital devices to reduce glare and eye strain.
